(22 min.) A good teaching film, this video addresses a variety of problems staff experience in bathing residents with dementia, specifically related to agitation and aggression.
It clarifies the difference between the two, and suggests helpful techniques when bathing, such as knowing the resident, individualizing care, etc.
Filmed in the States, it also portrays congressional testimony about depression.
Although quality of picture is poor, the strength of this program is that it explains the function of the brain in common, simple language. It is an excellent overview of neuro function as it relates to behaviour. 1998 (21 min.) This video provides very useful verbal and non-verbal communication techniques for caregivers in real life settings.Also included is a review of the losses associated with Alzheimer's disease, common behavioural symptoms, the influence of physical health on behaviour, and guidelines for handling catastrophic reactions.It emphasizes the importance of communication and relationships between staff, residents and family members around mealtime, and lists ten commandments of effective communication during mealtimes.Tape 2 (20 min.) This video offers guidelines for feeding someone properly, displays effective helping techniques, and discusses how the resident dining experience can be enhanced. Dan Blazer, author of Depression in Late Life, who discusses the causes, treatment, nursing home issues, and potential for suicide of older adults.
